BIOGRAFIA
Licenciado em Medicina, exerceu atividade clínica e docente universitária, optando depois por se dedicar à empresa da família – Bial -, de que foi CEO (1979 – 2011) e chairman (2011 – 2021). Sob a sua liderança, criou e desenvolveu um Centro de Investigação, especializado na investigação de novos fármacos inovadores, onde foram criados os dois primeiros medicamentos de investigação portuguesa a serem comercializados no mercado global: um antiepilético e um medicamento para a Doença de Parkinson.
Em 1994 criou, com Bial e o Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas, a Fundação Bial, com o objetivo de incentivar a investigação sobre o ser humano, tanto sob o ponto de vista físico como espiritual. Foi também presidente do Health Cluster Portugal e do Conselho Geral da Universidade do Porto, vice-presidente da Fundação de Serralves e membro da Direção da COTEC – Portugal.
Publicou dez livros, entre os quais os best-sellers “Ser Espiritual” (38ª edição) e “Da Ciência ao Amor” (16ª edição). Em 2021 retirou-se da vida profissional, para se dedicar à Fundação Bial, a que preside, à leitura, à escrita e à família.
Entre outras distinções, tem três condecorações de Estado: Comendador da Ordem do Mérito, Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Mérito e Grã-Cruz da Ordem da Instrução Pública. Foi distinguido com cinco doutoramentos Honoris Causa pelas Universidades de Cádis, Porto, Coimbra, Lisboa e Portucalense. Recebeu os Prémios “Neurociências da Louisiana State University” e “Universidade de Lisboa”, e foi eleito Membro Honorário da Parapsychological Association of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
//EN A graduate in medicine, he worked in clinical practice and as a university professor before choosing to devote himself to the family business—Bial—where he served as CEO (1979–2011) and chairman (2011–2021). Under his leadership, he established and developed a Research Center specializing in the development of innovative new drugs, where the first two Portuguese-developed drugs to be marketed globally were created: an antiepileptic and a medication for Parkinson’s disease.
In 1994, together with Bial and the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities, he founded the Bial Foundation with the goal of promoting research on the human being, from both physical and spiritual perspectives. He also served as president of Health Cluster Portugal and the General Council of the University of Porto, vice president of the Serralves Foundation, and a member of the Board of Directors of COTEC—Portugal.
He has published ten books, including the bestsellers *Ser Espiritual* (38th edition) and *Da Ciência ao Amor* (16th edition). In 2021, he retired from professional life to devote himself to the Bial Foundation, which he chairs, as well as to reading, writing, and his family.
Among other honors, he has received three state decorations: Commander of the Order of Merit, Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, and Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction. He has been awarded five honorary doctorates by the Universities of Cádiz, Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon, and Portucalense. He received the “Louisiana State University Neuroscience Award” and the “University of Lisbon Award,” and was elected an Honorary Member of the Parapsychological Association of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
